Health, Safety and Training Manager

Barrick is a leading international gold mining company, with a portfolio of 26 operating mines and various advanced exploration and development projects, located across five continents.
Barrick Tanzania is part of the Barrick Gold Corporation group of companies and is the largest gold mining company in Tanzania. There are four operating gold mines - Bulyanhulu, North Mara, Tulawaka and Buzwagi; and a nickel mine project - Kabanga.

One of our Mining Operations in Tanzania is currently searching for an experienced Health, Safety & Training Manager.  This position is required to provide leadership and technical support to ensure optimum health of all employees and contractors, comply with international safety management standards that exceed worldwide industry practice and any applicable legislative

requirements, training and development of policies and procedures are formulated and implemented in accordance with industry standards, aligned to Tanzanian Training and Education requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership to ensure that employees and contractors adhere to safety and environmental standards that exceed worldwide industry practice and any applicable legislative requirements.

  • Manage the activities of the Health, Safety and Training department to ensure agreed targets are achieved, within corporate health, safety and training guidelines in the areas of:
  1. Financial: Capital Cost

  2. Health and safety performance; and

  3. Capital Expenditure

  • Play a leading role in all relevant industry committees, government working parties and community groups to ensure that the Mines interests are represented and protected.

  • Develop, implement and monitor a safety management system with supporting procedures and programs to ensure the Mine complies with the highest international standards and any applicable legislation.

  • Develop monitoring processes and systems to ensure that health and safety non-conformance is quickly identified and rectified.

  • Identify training and development needs within the organization through job analysis, appraisal schemes and regular consultation with senior management team members.

  • Design and develop training and development programs based on both the organization’s and the individual’s needs.

  • Manage Succession Planning within the Health, Safety & Training Department to ensure that the company achieves development of Tanzanian employees to assume positions of increasing accountability.

  • Create a working environment which ensures that employees and contractors gain new skills and achieve their full potential by the development of effective training and mentoring programs.

  • Participate through the senior management team in developing the appropriate policies and procedures to ensure that Buzwagi the Mine targets for resources exploitation, capital management, cost control, safe working, employee development, health and safety management performance and corporate governance are achieved.

  • Continually review every aspect of the Health, Safety & Training Department’s operation to ensure that opportunities to add value and enhance shareholder wealth are identified and implemented.

  • Provide professional and technical support to the Mine and Process Managers to ensure that all mine operating and milling procedures comply with Safety best practice.

  • Actively participate in appropriate industry committees, government working parties and community groups to ensure that the mines interests are represented and protected.

Qualifications & Experience:

Qualification:

  • Tertiary qualification in Occupational Health and Safety

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years post qualification experience

  • Minimum 10 years experience in a supervisory role within a mining or minerals processing environment with particular emphasis on Open Pit mining is essential

  • Experience with mining operations and minerals processing in a developing country environment.

  • Awareness of cultural, business environment and infrastructure issues

  • Experience in systematic coaching and training of employees in developing country is essential.

  • Must have excellent written and spoken communication skills in the English language.
